Movable Type going Open Source…

I was late to get on this one. Six Apart’s Movable Type, still the top choice of many companies for enterprise blogging, is going open source.

WordPress is the dominant platform right now and currently powers this blog; its lead has been in large part due to its founder’s commitment to Open Source as well as a strong developer community.

Travel like a gimp

Of all the things I’ve tried to do in the last several weeks, airport travel was one of the most difficult.  As mobile as I’ve become, I generally overestimate my ability to cover ground. It doesn’t sound like a long distance from the parking lot to check-in to the gate, and it didn’t even occur to me that I should check my bag.

Luckily, Andrew G. had more sense than me and dropped me off at the counter.

On the way home, I McGyver’ed a towing system and attached it to my belt. Ugly, but I got a ton of laughs as well as compliments on my ingenuity.

all airline computers down

This is my first exclusive. When I got to hartsfield, the us airways computers were down and the line was ridiculous. A woman told me that all networks were down at the airport, which I didn’t believe. Systems have redundancy and don’t go down unless some doofus cuts through a line. Now they’re saying all airline systems nationwide went down, potentially due to a storm.

soldiers @airports

I’m at the gate and right now I’m looking at a soldier, a kid who is maybe 20. He looks a bit tired and seems out of place. The CNN airport news is talking about increasing troop levels in Iraq. A woman in a headscarf walks by with her husband. Kids are running around and playing with toys. A gentleman asks the soldier where he’s going and he says home, and I’m not convinced he really wants to go. He looks terrified.

Opposite me is a billboard with the dalai llama, right next to the coke machines.

Maybe its early but this is an eiry collage.

Do we all need to get iPhones?

When the iPhones ship in few weeks they will probably be beautifully designed and highly coveted. Apple is famous for cutting clutter and creating simple, elegant devices.

Without intending it, I’ve now owned 4 SmartPhones (all Blackberries) and can’t seem to stay organized without them. Of course, most of the time I’ve saved with the Blackberry has been spent fiddling/procrastinating with the Blackberry. Zero sum.

Here are the questions I’d ask before buying any of these devices.

  • Is the design easy and intuitive?
  • Does it have feature bloat?
  • Is it stable and reliable?
  • Does it have good battery life?
  • Is the network structure and technology going to be supported for at least 2 more years?
  • Why do you need it again? Really?

Broken legs and prohibition.

So I can’t do anything. I just found out I’m not supposed to be consuming any alcohol, as it may impede bone healing. I read it online from a British medical study, and Barbara (Dr. Pike’s surgical assistant) corroborated it. She explained to me that alcohol thins my blood, which lessens the effects of bone laying down a new matrix for bone growth.

Then it occurs to me. I’m taking aspirin for the expressed purpose of thinning my blood to prevent clots. And thinning is good. But I can’t drink beer because it thins my blood, therefore thinning is now bad. Huh?

So I repeat the above out loud to Barbara as I weigh my dilemma and propose the following: why don’t I lay off the aspirin and instead drink the beer.

Javaun's Dilemma

I don’t get an affirmative from Barb. I’ve had my share of chemistry, biology, biochem, what have you, so this seemed plausible.

So let’s review what you CAN’T do with a broken leg:

  • Can’t drink beer.
  • Can’t ride a bike.
  • Jen is out of town so I can’t… hang out with Jen.

Anyone have any ideas? I don’t have cable. What do normal people do to kill time?

Revamped Jamey Schwartz Classic Site

It’s been a several week project, but I just relauched the JameySchwartzClassic.com site. Jamey was a friend of mine, and I’d done a flat site of a few pages, contact form, and some photos for the first few years.

This year, I built out an online section that allows tournament registration and has private message boards. With Scott’s permission, I adapted a lot of the backend code he wrote for the L5Flyers site. Even though he’s a thousand miles in Denver, it was just like we were working on a project together again. Excellent…

The site is in beta starting tomorrow. The board of directors is going to bang on it and make sure everything is fully operational. I’ll continue to build out reporting function for the tournament directors as we approach August.

Pimp my crutches

Dropped by Atlanta Cycling today to visit the guys. The store was slammed and Mike, Matt, and Dave had their hands full. Nonetheless, I took a little time to custom tune my stock crutches.
